Hair loss during weight loss: what's expected and what isn't

It's common: a few months after significant weight loss, hair starts falling out more than usual. There's a medical explanation for this — and, in most cases, a timeline for it to improve.

Telogen effluvium

The technical name is telogen effluvium: diffuse hair shedding that usually appears 2 to 4 months after a physiological stress event for the body, which can include rapid or significant weight loss. Studies show a relationship between the intensity and speed of weight loss and the chance of developing this condition.

What might be behind it

  • rapid weight loss;
  • insufficient protein intake;
  • iron, zinc, or B-complex vitamin deficiency;
  • physiological stress from the weight-loss process itself;
  • other clinical causes, such as thyroid changes.

What isn't expected

Not every case of hair loss during weight loss is telogen effluvium, and not every case of hair loss is caused by weight loss. Very intense shedding, shedding that doesn't improve after a few months, or shedding combined with other symptoms deserves investigation — it shouldn't be assumed "normal" without evaluation.

What helps

Ensuring adequate protein intake is one of the best-supported measures. In some cases, lab tests can identify a specific deficiency that, once corrected, helps recovery. The decision to investigate or supplement anything should always be medical.
